Nyayo Magazine presents MOJA
There is no denying that, in terms of numbers, men dominate the professions in the safari industry across Africa. In fact, less than 11% of the global wildlife ranger workforce is female (World Female Ranger Week, 2021). But what factors contribute to this low statistic? The features in Moja show us that it is a combination of issues, in particular, a lack of opportunities and deep-rooted cultural differences between the roles of women and men in society.
“We are proud to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world, and especially in East Africa. The incredibly capable, brave, and pioneering women of Dunia camp have been featured in Moja - The Stories of Women in Africa, by Nyayo, a credible and independent magazine that provides a platform to share these stories.” — Nastassja, Brand Manager at Asilia Africa
But to the women who have pushed social norms and overcome adversity, we applaud you. We must celebrate these women and, in turn, support the movement to overcome social barriers for generations to come.
Why Moja? It means ‘one’ in East Africa’s most commonly- spoken language, Swahili. Moja’s mission is to empower women in the safari industry, and is the first of its kind in the Nyayo portfolio. I can say, with great confidence, that every single woman in this book – whether guide, ranger, writer, photographer, camp manager or researcher – is one of a kind.
So, without further ado, Nyayo Magazine presents Moja. I hope you enjoy every story. Every line. Every word.
