Nyayo Magazine: Where it started
Although Gemma D’Souza was born and raised in the UK, she has always been connected to Africa. Her father is from Kenya so, from a young age, her heart was stolen by Africa. Over the past five years, Gemma’s job selling high-end safaris across Africa, and creating content for a luxury travel brand has enabled her to travel extensively across the continent.
Gemma has lived in Dar es Salaam, volunteered in Zanzibar, and even camped from Kenya down to South Africa during on a 3-month trip. During her travels, Gemma has met a huge number of inspiring safari guides, who each taught her so much about Africa and the world in general.
With this in mind, it is in that spirit of gratitude that Gemma created Nyayo magazine, emphasising the stories, challenges and successes of safari guides across Africa. Her aim was to share the aspects that are often overlooked - their infectious passion, their inspiring enthusiasm, and their never-ending knowledge.
Nyayo Magazine is an independent publication, put together by Gemma and her small team at Nyayo Magazine. Each magazine is focussed on an African country, sharing some of the best, and most unique safari guide stories in that destination. The Nyayo collection currently include Volume 1 (Tanzania), Volume 2 (Kenya) and Volume 3 (Zambia) which have all been huge successes in the travel industry. In fact, the magazine now sits in a number of luxury safari camps and lodges across East Africa.
Nyayo Magazine is a tribute to all the safari guides who have dedicated, and continue to dedicate their lives to protecting Africa’s vulnerable wildlife. Although 2020 saw international travel come to a halt, the work of safari guides did not stop. The most recent volume (Zambia) shines a light on only a handful of these guides and rangers - Nyayo Magazine would not be here without them.
